ANV seeks pre-election pledges on abortion

The Alliance for a ‘No’ vote, which successfully campaigned against the Government’s recent abortion referendum, has called on all Irish political parties to state if they will legislate for the ‘X’ case.

The ruling in this case said that, under the Irish constitution, suicide is a genuine threat to someone’s life and therefore a legal grounds for abortion.

The ‘No’ Alliance mounted a demonstration outside the Dail today urging politicians from all parties to respect the electorate’s decision and legislate on the basis of this ruling.

Spokeswoman Fiona Clarke said: "Many parties, including the Labour Party, have come out and said that they want legislation. We will be looking for every TD and every party leader to bring forward these commitments."
