Man to be sentenced for arson

A 37-year-old man will be sentenced today for the arson of a Dublin Garda

station, during which Sergeant Andrew Callinan died.

Daniel O’Toole of Cashel Avenue, Crumlin in Dublin has been convicted of arson but a jury failed to reach a majority decision on charges of capital murder and murder in connection with a fire at Tallaght Garda Station in July 1999.

At the time the presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Carney delayed sentence on

the arson charge until a retrial, which is not expected for at least a year.

However, earlier this month O’Toole was jailed at his own request.

The judge then decided to adjourn sentencing until today.

Since his last court appearance O’Toole has been sentenced to six years on a separate charge which is unrelated to the arson conviction.
