John Taylor to stand down as MP
Ulster Unionist deputy leader John Taylor today announced that he will not contest the next General Election due to a heavy workload.
The 63-year-old Strangford MP has represented the constituency since 1983 and is known for his controversial statements on the direction of the peace process.
He was beaten by David Trimble for the leadership of the UUP in 1995.
Mr Taylor, whose decision came as Northern Secretary John Reid dampened hopes of an imminent deal, had been selected to contest the Strangford seat at the next Westminster election.
Now his seat is being targeted by the DUP who hope to win it with their candidate Iris Robinson.
