IRELAND

Independent ministers have told Government colleagues to review all Irish-based multinational company’s tax bills and ban any future Apple-type deals  in return for supporting plans to reject the €13bn EU ruling against the technology giant.

SPORT

Experience is everything. When Michael Fennelly pulled up in the All-Ireland semi-final replay with Waterford, it looked a serious injury, and so it proved:  the Kilkenny midfielder was out for the rest of the season with an achilles tendon problem. Scratch one big name for this weekend.

There was a touch of ‘out with old Robbie, in the new’  at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday, as the veteran Keane signed off with a trademark flourish and then, with his own exquisite free kick, rising star Brady signed in on the night with an equally characteristic strike.

BUSINESS

Sterling rose almost 1% against the euro yesterday as a survey of British factories suggested the UK was not heading into a steep slump  in the wake of the UK vote to quit the EU after all.

Pre-tax profits at Irish-owned pharmacy chain Sam McCauley last year rose by 53% to €2.98m.  Newly filed accounts show that the group’s revenues for the 12 months to the end of last September marginally increased from €74.16m to €74.78m.
