The pair were remanded in custody from a special sitting of Killarney District Court on Saturday, where each faced four charges.

The accused are Marcus O’Rourke, aged 46, from Rathanane, Kilcummin, Co Kerry, and Brian O’Sullivan, aged 32, from Coolies, Muckross.

They are charged with robbing €5,000 at Waterville Post Office on August 3, and with having a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to commit a robbery at the same place and on that date.

The charges also allege that they rammed a blue Mazda car into a vehicle occupied by two gardaí at Kill, Kilgobnet, on August 3.

They are further charged with damaging a Garda car.

There was no application made for bail by their solicitor, and both men were granted free legal aid.

Judge James O’Connor remanded the pair to appear again before Tralee District Court on Thursday.

A crowd of people had gathered outside the court to see the men being brought into the hearing, and removed in custody again after the court sitting.

Meanwhile, on Saturday evening, a woman who had been questioned by gardaí in relation to the investigation was released without charge.

The woman, in her late 20s, was arrested on Thursday and had been detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Killarney Garda Station.
