A man and a woman have died after a collision between two vans in Offaly on Friday afternoon.

The drivers of both vans, a woman in her 40s and a man in his 50s, died following the collision at about 12.30pm at Cappincur, near Tullamore.

The man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene a short time after the collision. Both bodies were subsequently removed from the scene.

The fatal crash brings the number of dead on Irish roads to date this year to 158, 10 more than recorded to the same date in 2025.

Gardaí have called for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. In particular, they asked for any road users who may have been travelling on the Dangan Road between 12pm and 1pm and who might have camera footage of any sort to make the footage available to investigators.

The road was initially preserved pending an examination by forensic collision investigators but reopened in due course.

Gardaí said that the local coroner had been notified and post-mortem examinations were to be conducted on the deceased.

A second serious road collision was earlier reported in the Midlands, with two people hospitalised after a car collided with a wall near Stradbally in Co Laois in the early hours of the morning.
