Gardaí in south Kerry investigating two deaths in the past week

Gardaí in south Kerry have ruled out foul play but are continuing to investigate the circumstances related to the "sudden deaths" of two people in the county. 

The deceased man was found dead on June 28 and the woman died in another part of the county the next day. Both were in their 30s. Early indications are that the deceased were known to each other.

At both funerals, donations were sought for a suicide charity.

Supt Flor Murphy of Killarney Garda Station said “two sudden deaths” were being investigated and a file was being prepared for the coroner.

“There is no question of foul play or of any other party being involved,” Supt Murphy said.

The number of suicides in south Kerry since January stands at six. A further seven people took their own lives in 2015. Waterville alone has had three suicides in the last year.

In May, the Kerry South coroner Terence Casey, who has been outspoken in his efforts to tackle the suicide rates in Kerry, highlighted the issue of older suicides after the jury at inquests returned verdicts of suicide in the case of four out of seven people aged 50 to 82.
