Man held over fatal shooting in Cork
A man was still being questioned last night by gardaí investigating the fatal shooting of another man in a house in Cork City in April.
The 44-year-old, arrested in the Youghal area of East Cork at around 8am yesterday, was taken to Togher Garda Station for questioning about the death of Diarmuid Byrne, 44, at his home in Ballyphehane on the southside of the city, five weeks ago.
Mr Byrne, who lived alone, died instantly from a single gunshot wound to the head while with a friend in an upstairs room of his house at Plunkett Road around 4.30pm on April 26.
It is understood the pair had been examining the legally held single bore shotgun when it was discharged.
The distraught friend raised the alarm and co- operated with gardaí.
Detectives were initially treating the shooting as a tragic accident but their suspicions were aroused following an examination of the body at the scene by assistant state pathologist, Dr Margot Bolster, and following a detailed forensic examination of the scene itself.
They ordered exhaustive forensic and ballistic tests on the weapon and the bullet, which it is understood were concluded by scientists at the Forensic Science Ireland labs in Dublin in recent days.
