Cork towns to host lifelong learning events
Mallow and Cobh have announced plans to host their first lifelong learning festival events, but fringe events are also taking place in Midleton, Clonakilty, Skibbereen, and Beara.
Events in Midleton include historical walks and bee-keeping workshops, Clonakilty’s events will kick off on Inchydoney Strand, bird-box building workshops will take place in Skibbereen, while fish filleting, photography and chocolate-making classes will be on offer in Beara.
Ahead of Monday’s launch, Lord Mayor Cllr Chris O’Leary yesterday encouraged people across the city and county to get involved.
Mallow will host a series of workshops and demonstrations, featuring the traditional and the experimental, the reflective and the creative, the practical and the digital, to showcase the many learning opportunities available within its hinterland.
A Mallow festival trail has been established that will take participants on a journey of discovery.
Visitors to the Q Centre in Quartertown will be able to learn how to make and plant summer windowboxes, upholster their favourite chair, design a hat to show off at the town’s Cork Racecourse, or learn to relax with a session of yoga and mindfulness.
Those interested in the media will be able to make a vox pop.
Mallow College of Further Education will open the doors to its sound engineering rooms to teach people how to make their own home recordings. Sessions will be offered on everything from complementary therapies to animal care, with workshops also on how to read your payslip.
The Gilbert Centre will host a workshop on roof-gardening and Mallow Daycare will have an open afternoon of music and song. The Men’s Shed in Ballyellis will host a workshop in making an upside-down apple tart.
