Bank official sues over tiger kidnap

A junior bank official claims his employer attempted to scapegoat him over a €7.6m tiger kidnapping in which his girlfriend and members of her family were held hostage to make him hand over the money to criminals, the High Court has heard.

In February 2009, Shane Travers, aged 30, was forced to hand over four bags containing the cash from Bank of Ireland, College Green, Dublin, before his then girlfriend, her nephew, and the girlfriend’s mother were released by armed and masked men.

Mr Travers was subsequently arrested and questioned for 48 hours but was never charged and, he says, gardaí do not consider him a suspect.
