1916-themed lectures and events planned for Cork over the next week

A number of lectures and events on 1916 take place in Cork over the next week.

At University College Cork tonight, University College Dublin professor of modern Irish history Diarmaid Ferriter will speak about 1916: New Perspectives, Old Rows.

Admission to the 7.30pm lecture in the Aula Maxima is free but on a first-come first-served basis for this, the first in a series of events organised by the Church of Ireland Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross for the centenary year of 1916. Prof Ferriter's talk will be followed by responses from UCC historians John Borgonovo and professor emeritus John A Murphy.

Other UCC historians are among the speakers at a free two-day conference next Friday and Saturday: The Rising of Poets & Playwrights? The Arts & The 1916 Easter Rising. Music, poetry and other artistic work that inspired, or were prompted by, the Easter Rising and those connected with it are among topics being addressed.

The keynote address on Friday night by Micheál Ó Suilleabháin, professor of music at University of Limerick, will look at music of the Rising, with particular reference to Seán Ó Riada’s Mise Éire film score. Papers will also deal with Constance Markiewicz, Jack B Yeats, and Patrick Pearse, and with theatre, film, and poetry.

UCC’s chaplaincy begins a series of weekly lectures on the Catholic Church in the revolutionary decade, 1912-1923 next Monday at 6pm in Boole 1 lecture theatre. Gabriel Doherty of UCC school of history will explore the Catholic Church’s engagement with the 1912-1914 Home Rule crisis; its attitude to female suffrage; to the First World War; and its take on the 1916 Rising. He will also address its position on various issues during the 1919 to 1921 War of Independence and the Civil War that followed.
