Irish Security Industry Association staff were warned of tiger kidnap risk
The Irish Security Industry Association (ISIA) issued a statement as the Garda investigation into Thursday morning’s raid in Dublin continued.
A cash-in-transit worker, employed by GSLS, was forced to attend work as normal on Thursday and then had to hand over what gardaí said was a “substantial” sum to a gang who had taken his partner and her daughter hostage.
The three-person gang, masked and with at least one armed with a gun, had gained entry to the house late the previous night.
The GSLS worker handed over the money on the campus of Dublin Airport, and shortly afterwards his partner and her daughter were found in a van in Meath.
The association said in a statement: “The ISIA condemns in the strongest terms possible this horrific attack on a [cash-in-transit] staff member and, of course, his family, who will feel the effects of this horrendous ordeal for some time.
“The safety of staff members and their families is of paramount concern to all of our transport division members.
“In recent weeks we have raised concerns about the risks to our staff over the busy Christmas period and this deplorable incident has, unfortunately, proved that the threat to CIT companies and their staff from criminal elements in this country is extremely real.
“We are thankful that this particular incident ended without physical injury to the staff member and his family. We ask the minister for justice to ensure the Garda are given the resources necessary to protect all within the industry and that the [ Private Security Authority] engage constructively with the industry.“
GSLS said it was assisting gardaí and that it adheres to prevailing codes of practice for the carrying of money, adding that the primary concern was for the well-being of its employee and his family.
