VIDEO: How many Charlies Chaplins do you need to break a record?

It still made a spectacular sight, 151 Charlie Chaplin lookalikes walking from the community centre to Fossett’s Big Top on the promenade in Waterville, Co Kerry, where the iconic comic and his wife Oonagh holidayed with their family throughout the 1950s and ’60s.
And even though they didn’t beat the world record of 250 set in Los Angeles, organisers of the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival were happy with the numbers who dressed up as ‘The Tramp’, up 10 from last year’s effort.
The youngest lookalike — complete with black hair, moustache, dickie bow, black jacket, baggy trousers, hat, and cane — was seven-week-old Liam O’Shea.
Waterville native Laoise King travelledfrom Roscommon with her children, James, 11, Thomas, 9, and Aoife Connolly, 7.
The family are regular visitors to the seaside village and wouldn’t miss the festival, now in its fifth year.
“It’s a lovely way to finish off the summer holidays before they head back to school next week,” Laoise said. “They love the timeless humour of Chaplin and we all dress up every year. The festival really has brought Charlie Chaplin to a younger generation. It’s just simple fun. That and Otto the Clown at Fossett’s Circus are their highlights every year and we’ll be back again next year. We wouldn’t miss it.”
Festival chairman Terry Dunne said this had been their most successful comedy festival weekend but the record attempt clashed with the All-Ireland football semi-final.
Legendary GAA manager Mick O’Dwyer is a huge supporter but when Kerry are playing in a semi-final there’s only one place you’ll find him, in Croke Park.
Criticism for missing an important UN Security Council meeting on the Syrian conflict two years ago didn’t put US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, off returning to Waterville.
Ms Power was enjoying the festival this year where her husband Cass Sunstein, a former adviser to President Barrack Obama, was a guest speaker on the changing role of government in the 21st century in Tech Amergin on Saturday.
The Chaplin family are also big supporters and have maintained their link with Waterville. They were represented by Arthur Chaplin, the actor’s grandson.
