St John’s Church to get stained glass for Tralee’s 800th anniversary

A pledge by a descendant of a family that ruled Tralee for 300 years is to be fulfilled: Dorset-based stained-glass artist Tom Denny, a descendant of the Elizabethan planter, Edward Denny, is to complete a window for the town’s St John’s Catholic church.

St John’s Church to get stained glass for Tralee’s 800th anniversary

St John’s is on Castle St — named after the Norman castle the Dennys took over in the early 17th century — and the stained glass will be based on themes of love, understanding, and reconciliation. The window is to be located between the 8th and 9th stations of the cross, designed by the artist Sean Keating, and will replace the current plain glass.

The three-panel window will fulfill a commitment made by Mr Denny during a visit to Tralee some years ago. It will mark the 800th anniversary of Tralee’s foundation as an Anglo-Norman settlement.
