According to forecasts, the weather may be slightly better than in recent days for the festival, which gets under way tonight with a beach party and fireworks display.

Professional sculptors from Duathain Dealbh (Fleeting Sculpture) are creating a village of knights and princesses which will be unveiled tomorrow morning on the beach in the Wexford village.

Locals and visitors are invited to join in the world record attempt at 2pm on the beach for the most “sand angels” created in any one place. This will be followed at 3pm with music by the Barrack Street Band on the village green.

Other family events taking place tomorrow include a painting wall, bungee trampoline, water zorbing, tug-o-war, human fuzzball, an exhibition cricket match, wrestling, and children’s beach games.

An amateur sand sculpting competition takes place on Sunday with the winners receiving the David Brown Memorial Trophy and more prizes on offer for the best sculptures.

The festive season will come early that day as a one-mile “Santa Dash” is being held on the beach with live music, street theatre, and comedy. The festival will close with a fire sculpture on Sunday evening.

Committee member Cathy Dowling said: “There is huge interest in the world record attempt to create the most sand angels on a beach in one location. This is free to participate in and we are inviting everyone to join us to make the attempt a success.”
