Flash-up meal promotes Street Feast in Cork

If you happen to be in Cork City tomorrow, the Coal Quay Plaza is the place to be — 20 lucky people will be sitting down to a free lunch and you could be one of them.

The ‘Flash Feast’ will start at around 12.30pm near the Bridewell Garda Station — trestle tables, bunting, and the Lord Mayor of Cork will all appear as if from nowhere, with guests invited to partake in the spread.

Though there's only space for 20, another big foodie event is planned for June 14 - around 400 people will be fed as part of Cork Midsummer Festival's Street Feast.

“Street Feast is all about celebrating your street, area or community,” said Eoin MacCuirc from Cork’s Food Policy Council and co-ordinator of this year’s Street Feast campaign. “It is also about helping to forge stronger links between local food suppliers, businesses and neighbourhoods.”

Fellow organiser Joleen Cronin said people don’t need to organise extravagant banquets to take part, events can be “as simple as a few families getting together”.

Some of the city’s most-loved eateries — Les Gourmandises, Isaacs, and Rocket Man — will turn Oliver Plunkett St into one very long dining room.

The Street Feast forms part of the Cork Midsummer Festival, which runs from June 12-14 and June 19-21.
