Man hit by car after going to wedding

The victim of an early- morning road accident yesterday in east Cork attended a wedding in the area on Saturday and had only recently returned home to Ireland after years working in New Zealand.

The man, named locally as Cathal Torpey, died in hospital after he was hit by a car at 5.15am yesterday on the Cork side of Castlemartyr on the N25.

Mr Torpey, 33, had been walking on the road when he was struck by a Ford Focus. He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, but died a short time later. The female driver of the car was not injured.

It is understood that Mr Torpey was from the town of Tulla in Co Clare and that he was among those attending a wedding at the Castlemartyr resort on Saturday.

It is believed he had only returned to Ireland in recent months after a long period working in New Zealand.

A civil engineer and a graduate of NUI Galway, it is understood he had also worked in Australia since leaving college, as well as on various projects in Ireland.

The road where the accident took place was closed for a time afterwards to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, with traffic diversions in place.

The local parish priest in Tulla, Fr Martin O’Brien, said the sense in the community was one of shock and sadness as news of the tragedy filtered through.

“The community is devastated,” Fr O’Brien said. “He is connected to a huge number of people here in the community.

“Since the news spread this morning there is complete devastation.”

It is understood that Mr Torpey’s family travelled to Cork yesterday following the accident.
