Loss of 45 jobs to Newcastle West ‘a devastating blow’

The loss of 45 jobs in Newcastle West has left the community devastated after the decision by the Garvey Group to close the town’s SupervValu store.

According to a statement on behalf of the company yesterday afternoon, the store will cease trading on Saturday, April 25, “due to difficult trading conditions”.

“This is a difficult time for employees and we are committed to supporting them where possible in securing alternative employment,” said the statement. “A redundancy package, along with CV and interview training, will be offered to all staff. They will also be informed of potential redeployment options within the Garvey Group.”

The store employs 11 full-time and 34 part-time staff and is one of the town’s largest employers.

“SuperValu has 221 stores across Ireland and is committed to local employment and supporting local suppliers,” the statement said.

“75% of everything on SuperValu’s shelves is sourced or produced in Ireland, contributing almost €2bn to the Irish economy and helping to sustain almost 30,000 Irish jobs in the farm, food, and retail sector.”

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Collins described the closure as “devastating news for Newcastle West and the greater West Limerick area” given the amount of job losses.

“It’s a huge blow to the staff, the management, and the company itself. You’d have to take time out to think of the local suppliers that feed into Garveys as well.”

The Garvey Group also operates a Centra in the town.
