Parents warned of detergent dangers to children

Liquid laundry capsules can pose serious risks to children who may confuse them with toys or sweets, according to experts urging parents and childminders to be mindful of the dangers.

Parents warned of detergent dangers to children

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the National Poisons Information Centre (NPIC) have issued a joint plea to anyone minding children to store and use liquid detergent capsules safely.

The capsules are small and colourful and there are fears that children are mistaking them for toys or sweets.

“If the liquid comes into contact with the eyes it can cause conjunctivitis, eye pain, and damage to the cornea potentially resulting in temporary blindness,” said Edel Duggan, clinical director with the NPIC.

“If the liquid is swallowed, it can result in severe vomiting and respiratory distress. It can also cause a rash if it comes into contact with the skin.”

Between 2011 and 2014, there were more than 720 enquiries to the NPIC at Beaumont Hospital regarding liquid detergent capsules. The majority of these involved children under the age of three.

Last year, 90% of cases arose from exposure following ingestion, with the remaining 10% a result of eye contact.

“Our advice is for parents and childminders to store the liquitabs out of reach and sight, preferably in a locked cupboard,” said Dr Duggan. “When using the liquitabs, read the instructions and safety messages on the labels. They should not be taken out when children are close by.”

In case of accidental exposure to children, the HSA and the NPIC advise adults to immediately rinse the exposed area with water.

If the liquid is swallowed, rinse as much of the detergent as possible from the child’s mouth and do not induce vomiting.

After rinsing, it is advisable to call a doctor or the Poison Control Centre on 01 809 2166.
