Health Minister Leo Varadkar has apologised to patients for the worst emergency department overcrowding crisis ever recorded, admitting it is putting people’s health at risk.

The minister made the comments in his first remarks on the issue in a week — and amid ongoing claims he failed to show any leadership by taking a holiday to Florida as the scandal unfolded.

Speaking to UTV Ireland last night, Mr Varadkar said “I reiterate and apologise to patients and their families” for the unprecedented events in hospitals nationwide.
