Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s a portable toilet rocket

A group of American rocket enthusiasts may be potty but they ended up flushed with success after launching a portable toilet.

Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s a portable toilet rocket

The levitating lavatory roared skywards, made an arc, then, slowed by parachutes, almost landed on a spectator’s pick-up truck 600m away.

In the US, the Michiana Rocketry club members planned the project for more than two years. The club is trying to increase awareness of rocketry as a hobby and prove it is possible to turn a porta-potty into a rocket and launch it successfully.

The Herald Palladium said that lift-off was achieved in a soya bean field near Three Oaks in Berrien County in Michigan State. About 30 people worked on the rocket, from engineers to sales people who lined up sponsors.

Rocket enthusiast Bob Bycraft says the project was carefully planned and not “barnyard engineering”.

Cat in colour

BULGARIA:

The unusual sight of a bright green cat has been turning heads on the streets of a seaside resort.

Locals at Varna, on the Black Sea, thought the cat was the victim of vandals who had spraypainted its fur green.

They even launched a campaign and set up a Facebook page called ‘Punishment to the the perpetrator of this criminal act!’ to try to catch those responsible.

But it turned out that

the feline had been sleeping on an abandoned heap of synthetic green paint in a garage.

Red card

BRITAIN:

A Council Estate Santa Claus Christmas card is no longer available on the Clintons website after customers branded it “vile” and “beyond offensive” on social media.

The £2 (€2.50) card listed “10 reasons why Santa Claus must live on a council estate”, including “He has a serial record for breaking and entering!” and “He only works once a year”.

At number four on the card’s list was “He’s never actually been seen doing any work in his whole life” and number five read “He drinks alcohol during working hours”.

The description on the Clintons website said: “This funny card is great for sending at Christmas time.”

However, customers on the greetings card retailer’s Facebook page did not see the humour.

Belle Sebastian wrote: “Disgraceful! I live on a council estate — never have I been in trouble with the police, I don’t drink, I worked full time for the council until I became very sick this year so I attend university whilst I recover. I cannot believe that your company has allowed this vile prejudice.”

Following the complaints,

the card is no longer available on the Clintons website. The URL instead brings up an error page saying “Whoops, our bad...”

A spokesman for Clintons could not be reached for comment.

A truffle big

USA:

A record-breaking 1.88kg white truffle has sold for $61,250 (€49,850) at a New York City auction.

Sotheby’s said the fungus was sold to a food and wine lover from Taiwan, bidding by telephone.

The truffle was found last week in Umbria, Italy, by Sabatino Truffles.

The firm had said it turned down million-dollar offers from buyers in China.

Instead, it chose to auction the truffle in New York to benefit Citymeals-on-Wheels and the Children’s Glaucoma Foundation.

Sabatino Truffles spokeswoman Jane Walsh had said the truffle was slightly smaller than an American football.

She said the average white truffle is about the size of a walnut.

Sotheby’s said that the previous largest white truffle ever found weighed in at 1.1kg.
