Force awakens for fans of Star Wars saga
Fans will be reassured to see familiar favourites like the Millennium Falcon, but with no sign of the Kery-filmed footage, some are wondering if the scenes shot in Ireland this summer have been left on the cutting room floor.
Cast and crew from the movie — including director JJ Abrams and Mark Hamill — were on Skellig Michael in July amid tight security.
It was originally thought the island could be the “inhospitable world” Jedi Luke Skywalker lives on as a hermit for 30 years.
In the first trailer for Star War Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which was screened in US cinemas yesterday, the camera pans across a desert landscape as a voiceover declares: “There has been an awakening — have you felt it?”
Then actor John Boyega is seen dressed as a Stormtrooper, breathless and panicked.
The voiceover later continues “the dark side — and the light”, in a reference to the good and evil sides of The Force.
It also contains scenes of the Millennium Falcon in a battle with TIE Fighters and a battalion of Stormtroopers being armed, while a hooded and cloaked figure is seen with an upgraded lightsaber. It concludes with the Star Wars theme composed by John Williams.
The trailer was so widely anticipated that fans began to make their own “trailers” with a number of fake videos appearing online.
While most made little effort to masquerade as authentic, some were so slickly edited they fooled millions of viewers.
One clip in particular was viewed millions of times and even used logos for Disney and Abrams’ production company Bad Robot.
Star War Episode VII: The Force Awakens is due to be released on December 18, 2015.
