Still a team but Donegal pub a divided Kingdom
Seamus and Noreen Doherty have been enjoying friendly rivalry ahead of Sunday’s big game at Croke Park. And both have been bust trying to convert customers to supporting their team.
They have even allowed each other to put their own flags up in the bar. They are also trying to talk the customers of An Tuath Nua in Buncrana around to supporting their teams.
Seamus has even bought Noreen a half-and-half jersey in a bid to ensure they don’t fall out.
For many years Seamus Doherty has been forced to listen to how Kerry were the masters of Gaelic football. But now that Donegal are favourites for Sunday’s game, Seamus is doing all the bragging.
“I have had to listen to it for many years now. But I have a strong feeling she will be eating humble pie come Sunday afternoon.
“They may have the pedigree but we are the new kids on the block.
“I even got her this half and half jersey so she will give my head a bit of peace,” said Seamus.
The couple met 20 years ago when they were living in Boston.
They have one daughter Sorcha, 8, who is a staunch Donegal fan. “She knows what side her bread is buttered on,” joked Seamus.
Noreen is from outside Killarney and reminds people of her Kerry background whenever she gets a chance.
Seamus says she hasn’t threatened him just yet in the event of a Donegal win.
“It should be a great occasion and it has been great fun in the lead-up to the final. It might not be as much fun on Sunday and I know what I have to do to make sure our customers are shouting for the right team,” said Seamus.
