Breast cancer sufferer: ‘I have earned medical card’

Elaine Kelly, 37, a single woman living in Ballycullen in Dublin has metastatic breast cancer and is unable to work.

Breast cancer sufferer: ‘I have earned medical card’

Elaine was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. When she completed her treatment programme a year later, the cancer had spread.

Elaine got a discretionary medical card in September 2012 for two years. Last December she got a letter from the HSE telling her all cards were being reviewed.

Even though her card had not expired she had to fill out an application form and attached evidence of her financial situation. She telephoned the HSE to tell them she found the process very arduous, particularly because of her illness.

“They told me they were aware of my circumstances, but required all evidence before they would consider continuing my card.”

The last communication she had from the HSE was that her card would expire at the end of this month.

“I would not classify myself as a hardship case — I am lucky to have had income protection, but I don’t know how long it is going to last.

“I will be able to manage without a medical card but I feel I should be entitled to it. I have worked very hard, paid my taxes and now have a terminal illness. Some medical cards are abused, but there are people in circumstances like me who should have it. I am fighting a tough enough battle.”
