Ballinacurra House scoops top wedding award
The accolade was presented as part of the annual awards held by Weddings Online — the country’s largest wedding website.
Des McGahan, who co-runs the strictly private venue with his wife Lisa, said it was an honour to receive such a recognised award.
“It’s always nice to win awards, but this one is particularly credible because of the judges involved. For example, Alan Byrne’s wedding website in the States is probably the most prestigious in the world, certainly in the US.
“It’s a great endorsement as we celebrate 10 years in 2013 and we believe that we have pioneered the market for exclusive estate rentals.”
Mr McGahan explained that not everyone originally understood the concept behind Ballinacurra House when it was set up.
“When we first went into business a lot of people were asking ‘What’s this place that’s a hotel, but it’s not a hotel, and you can’t get into it?’. The first five years we suffered badly because people didn’t understand the concept of exclusive-use venues.
“A hotel has open access to the public whereas we are a 40-acre private estate with a beautiful old manor house that was built in the 1790s. We only ever have one group here at a time so it’s a totally private experience — it’s much more personalised and individual.”
He says that nowadays, wedding parties are looking for something a little different. Because of the downturn, big, lavish weddings are a thing of the past — brides are looking for unique and intimate celebrations that are special yet cost-effective.
“The biggest challenge for couples is how to make your wedding cost-effective without compromising on quality. This is why small, bespoke weddings are making a comeback — we provide the perfect solution for downsizing but not downgrading.”
According to the venue’s website, the private wedding rate runs from €3,960 to €5,500 for B&B accommodation for 44 people per night, and there is a minimum requirement of a two-night stay.
