Teenager faces city burglary charges

Ciarán Callanan, aged 19, of 61 Monastery Avenue, Blarney St, Cork, was arrested by Garda David Hickey on Thursday. Callanan was charged with carrying out 11 burglaries between Aug 10 and Sept 3.

When he was charged and cautioned, Mr Callanan made no reply to any of the charges.

Solicitor Diane Hallihan was appointed on free legal aid to represent the accused.

Ms Hallihan said there was no application for bail. She said Mr Callanan had a very bad substance abuse problem and needed to address that and get on to some kind of programme.

On the application of Inspector Bill Duane, Judge Leo Malone remanded the accused in custody until next Thursday.

The offences were allegedly committed mainly in Bishopstown and surrounding areas, including Togher and the Western Road.

Many of the premises referred to on the burglary charge sheets were businesses, including the medical centre at Dennehy’s Cross, Bishopstown café, Hourigan’s Montessori, Kilross medical centre, Bellisima beauty salon, Acu Life acupuncture clinic, offices at the Bon Secours hospital and Brookfield leisure centre, the Station shop at Gaol Cross, and a house at Sandown Crescent in Togher.
