Kerry double murder appeal: Funds pour in

There’s been an exceptionally generous reaction to a public appeal in Killorglin, Co Kerry, for funds to meet the cost of repatriating the remains of victims of a double murder to Lithuania.

Kerry double murder appeal: Funds pour in

A fund has already collected thousands of euro since Jolanta Lubiene, 27, originally from Lithuania, and her eight-year-old daughter, Enrika, were murdered in their home in a Killorglin housing estate, on Jun 15.

The response was yesterday described as “marvellous’’ and substantial sums are still coming in.

Funds will not only be sufficient to cover repatriation expenses, but the society is confident there will also be some money left over for the family.

Initially, the cost of repatriation was reported to be around €20,000, but the figure is now said to be far less than that.

Donations can be made to account number: 31552836, sort code 905766, Bank of Ireland, Killorglin.

Meanwhile, a man in his 40s is still being detained by gardaí in Killarney in connection with the investigation.

From Lithuania, he works in a local business in Killorglin.

He was arrested in Killorglin early on Sunday under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held for a maximum period of 72 hours.

He is being held on suspicion of withholding information that could be essential to investigating gardaí. An interpreter is being used to facilitate questioning.

People in Killorglin have also voiced concerns about a killer at large in the community, amid claims that some women are not only double-locking the doors of their homes at night but are also locking their bedroom doors.

The ferocity of the attacks on Ms Lubiene, who sustained multiple stab wounds, and Enrika, who was stabbed in the neck, has shocked the community.

Gardaí have moved to allay fears and have appealed for public co-operation so that the double murderer can be brought to justice as soon as possible.

The murder weapon, a knife, has not yet been found, but a Garda tape used to cordon off the scene, 9 Langford Downs, Killorglin, has been removed.

Flowers, soft toys and candles brought by family members and friends of the victims are piled up outside the front door of the house.
