€467k raised in cancer radiothon

Almost half a million euro has been raised to support cancer services by Cork 96FM’s three-day radiothon.

€467k raised in cancer radiothon

When the frantic donation drive closed on Saturday afternoon, over €467,000 had been pledged to the Giving for Living event.

The money will go towards cancer services at the Mercy Hospital, Cork University Hospital and Marymount Hospice.

Inspired by a stream of stories about people’ personal experiences with cancer, listeners to the station hosted coffee mornings, texted donations, and held fundraising events.

The drivers at Bus Éireann returned to their skip collection and roped in an estimated €30,000 for the cause.

A dedicated call centre, set up at the Mercy Hospital, fielded a steady stream of calls and was the destination of some generous benefactors.

The patrons of the Holyhill Bar held their fundraiser and ran to the two city hospitals to deliver the proceeds.

The annual radiothon has now raised more than €2m since its inception in 2008.

Last year’s funds were used to fund awareness programmes, aid bereavement services, purchase specialist medical equipment, and help refurbish two isolation units at CUH.

Although the radiothon ended on Saturday, people can still donate to the drive at Bank of Ireland branch.
