New cameras linked to a computer system are to be installed in the Jack Lynch Tunnel early next year as part of a safety upgrade.

The contract has gone to tender for the cameras which will be positioned every 50 metres along both bores.

National Roads Authority (NRA) spokesman Sean O’Neill said the “automatic incident detection system” would link the cameras with computer software which would immediately alert tunnel staff to traffic accidents, smoke and flames.
