Calls for inquiry into ‘sinister’ online posts

An urgent garda and prison service investigation has been demanded into what has been described as “sinister” messages posted on Facebook by a feared Limerick criminal.

Fianna Fáil justice spokesman Niall Collins yesterday asked Justice Minister Alan Shatter an inquiry into a Facebook site which has messages, in the name of the criminal, and responses from a known associate.

In a message, the criminal, who cannot be identified, states: “The day I get out [from prison] is the day the party won’t stop in [Limerick address].”

Another says: “Not long and I will be rocking [area of Limerick] again, yaa.”

An associate responds: “Only a few months left kid. We are rocking this block again and, brother from another mother, fuck um all, only a few month and you will do it on your back.”

Mr Collins said: “The use of mobile phones in prison is bad enough, but if major criminals are able to put messages on social media, it is a very sinister development. It’s as if they are saying they can make public statements in total contempt for the prison authorities. I have written to the minister today to ask him to have the garda and prison authorities investigate these messages.”
