Gardaí hurt in domestic incident
They were attacked as they tried to calm down a man at a house at Cathedral Road, Gurranabraher, at about 6.30pm last Wed-nesday.
The gardaí had to call for reinforcements before the man was subdued.
“One of the gardaí had his nose broken and the other was bitten a number of times and had to receive a tetanus injection. They were both treated in the Mercy University Hospital,” said Supt Cadogan.
The male householder was detained and taken to Mercy University Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, gardaí are searching for a man who tried to rob a shop in a Cork suburb armed with “a pretty formidable knife”.
The man walked into St Michael’s Stores in Mahon at about 7.45pm on Wednesday and threatened a female member of staff with the weapon while he attempted to rifle the contents of the cash register.
However, he was then confronted by a brave male member of staff and fled empty-handed.
A Garda spokesman said the culprit may have fled into the nearby St Michael’s cemetery and appealed for anybody who saw him to contact gardaí.
He is described as having a local accent and about 6ft tall. “He was wearing a dark grey or black jacket, dark trousers, white or cream gloves and had his face covered with tights or a sock. The knife he was carrying was large, like a butcher’s knife,” the spokesman said.
