Tourism body set to decide on €5m project

Fáilte Ireland will shortly decide on a submission seeking its support for a €5m cultural and sports heritage project in Kerry.

Tourism body set to decide on €5m project

The tourism body is reviewing a proposal for a Kerry Cultural and Sporting Experience, on a site at Fitzgerald GAA Stadium in Killarney.

The initial idea envisaged a Kerry GAA museum but the concept was broadened to encompass other aspects of life and sport in the county.

“We’re embracing the literature, music, song, dance, and the culture and history of Kerry, as well as sport. This will be a living, interactive experience also involving theatre and space for exhibitions,” spokesman Michael Gleeson said.

Meetings have already been held with Fáilte Ireland, which is expected to provide upwards of €3m.

Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar said the submission is undergoing an assessment process for a decision due early this year.

Mr Gleeson, a former All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer, described the project as “very worthwhile” and was confident Fáilte Ireland would see its merits.

“If approval comes through from Fáilte Ireland, we should be ready to roll,” he said.

Mr Gleeson said it would be an added visitor attraction in Killarney that could attract an estimated 2m tourists per year.

The GAA has promised to back the project and the organising committee, under chairman Liam Chute, a retired top international manager of Kerry Group plc, has met with the GAA at national and local level.

It is hoped the GAA will provide a 10-year grant to cover a percentage of the overall cost.

Planning permission has been granted by Killarney Town Council for a two-storey museum, with parking facilities for cars and coaches, at the stadium.

The site, a short walking distance from the town centre, is at the eastern end of the stadium on what was once a training pitch.

The plan is that the facility will be self-financing and any profits made will be reinvested.

Opened in 1936, Fitzgerald Stadium has a capacity of between 30,000 and 40,000 spectators and is one of the country’s leading GAA grounds.
