Galway taxi drivers have placed stickers on their vehicles highlighting that nobody has ever been charged in relation to the murder of Eileen Costello O’Shaughnessy in 1997.

The 47-year-old mother-of-two was found dead in her taxi close to the main Galway-Tuam road on Sunday, Nov 30, 1997.

Ahead of the 15th anniversary of Ms Costello O’Shaughnessy’s death, friends and family are trying to raise awareness of the case by using stickers that say ‘Justice’.

“We are calling on people out there that have some little bit of information and have yet to come forward. They may now be in a position to do so 15 years later,” said Henry Hegarty, a friend of Ms Costello O’Shaughnessy.

“We have to remain optimistic about this. There is somebody out there that saw that taxi on that specific evening. It was between 6.45pm and 8.15pm that the car travelled on the N17 towards Claregalway. We believe somebody has the information that can bring the person who committed this heinous crime to justice.”

Over 400 taxis in the city and county have been furnished with ‘Justice’ stickers, while a website, www.justiceforeileen.com, has been launched.

Mr Hegarty appealed to the culprit to come forward to bring an end to the torture for Eileen’s family.

“This person walks free among our society, among our community and I appeal for that person to come forward. Just admit to what happened. The family have been waiting for each day over the last 15 years for a phonecall. They need closure at this stage,” said Mr Hegarty.
