The assault took place in the Mardyke area of the city at 10.30pm on Friday. The victim, 20, from Togher, was set about by five men who got out of a van.

Gardaí are investigating if the incident is linked to an altercation on Aug 7 when the victim was attacked by a group of men on Farranferris Avenue in the northside of Cork City.

It was the second assault in Cork on the day. Earlier a man was arrested following a slash hook attack. The incident happened at 6.50pm, when a man, 33, was attacked as he sat in the front garden of his house in Farranree. A 42-year-old man was arrested and brought to Mayfield Garda Station in relation to the incident.

Meanwhile, tourists and shoppers were horrified yesterday on Grafton St in Dublin as youths attacked each other with glass bottles. Three people were arrested and one man was taken to hospital after being stabbed in the neck at 6.30pm.
