Most flood damage claims accepted but fears for renewal cover

A solicitor offering his services free to flood victims in a Cork town said almost all claims for liability have been accepted by insurance companies.

However, Micheál O’Dowd of O’Hanlon & O’Dowd said one particular client in Glanmire had been refused flood insurance on a renewal policy.

The policy on the family home was due to expire this weekend but the insurance company advised flood cover would not be included in the renewal proposal.

Mr O’Dowd said a similar decision would “probably be par for the course” for nearly 60 householders in the area, whose homes were flooded on Jun 28.

“From what I can gather, insurance companies are mainly accepting liability but some are still arguing the nitty gritty about what it will eventually cost to fix properties,” Mr O’Dowd said.

All 49 houses in Meadowbrook Estate were damaged by the flooding.

There was also damage to property in Glanmire village and nearby Sallybrook.

Several business premises in the Hazelwood Shopping Centre and Sallybrook also experienced severe flooding.

Meanwhile, a number of further fundraising events are planned to aid Glanmire flood victims.

A novel event will take place in the local BK2 bar tomorrow night. Seven men, including three bar staff members, will be “auctioned off” to women to raise proceeds for the fund.

Those bidding the most will win prizes including meals for two at the Brook Inn, Vienna Woods Hotel, Isaac’s restaurant and one-hour flying lessons.

The highest bidders will also receive a bottle of champagne.

The bar will also hold a raffle which will feature prizes including bar tabs, hot towel shaves and haircuts.

Paudie Kissane, the Cork senior footballer, has agreed to sign autographs on the night and it is hoped some Munster rugby personalities will also be in attendance.

A fundraising dance will be held in the Vienna Woods Hotel tomorrow night, with tickets at €10 each.

Meanwhile, Sarsfield’s GAA Club has announced proceeds from its annual charity barbecue will go to local flood victims. It will be held in the club on Sat, Sept 7 at 8pm.

Chairman of Meadowbrook Residents’ Association, Jim Healy, said people had been very generous. “They have rallied around flood victims in their hour of need and we are eternally grateful for that.”
