Rockstar Sophie shows Bruce who’s the Boss
Sophie Sutton had the 35,000-strong crowd cheering and whistling for her as she sang the first verse to Springsteen’s 2002 hit Waiting on a Sunny Day in a duet with Bruce.
“People were asking me afterwards was it a set-up,” Sophie’s father Paul said of Tuesday’s concert.
“Nobody could believe that a girl so small knew all the words to one of Bruce’s classics.
“We left the RDS afterwards and Sophie had hundreds of people leaning out of cars asking was she the little girl on stage, beeping their horns and congratulating her. It was something else.”
It was Sophie’s first concert experience and Paul was adamant it was always going to be with The Boss.
“We are big, big fans of Bruce,” Paul said.
“Sophie is the youngest of five children and I made sure all the older kids had their first concert experience with Springsteen too.”
Sophie is not the first Sutton girl to have the opportunity to sing on stage with The Boss. Her older sister, Niamh, also sang live with Bruce at the RDS in 2009, belting out Dancing in the Dark with her hero to the full arena.
“Honestly, this is a complete coincidence,” said Paul.
“Although, I did know this time what could happen when he came towards us.
“Springsteen caught Sophie’s eye at the beginning of the night. He smiled at her and gave her a guitar pick from his pocket. She was over the moon.
“Later he walked over and put his hand out for her to join him on stage.”
Sophie got the real rock star experience as she sang and then gestured with Bruce for the E-Street Band to join in with their lyrics.
Sophie will start first class at Thaobh na Coille Gaelscoil in Stepaside, Dublin, this September.
“She’s a very confident and bubbly kid. She’s always been a performer,” Paul said.
“We’ve been speaking to the radio and been with photographers all day. I’d say it will only hit her in a few years time what actually happened her.”
