Close encounter with The Boss
As The Boss returned to Ireland for the first of two sell-out gigs, Steven Spielberg — one of the highest ever grossing film directors — was among the awestruck crowd. The man behind ET, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, and the Indiana Jones franchise was taking in the 62-year-old Springsteen’s E Street Band gig after arriving in Ireland earlier this week.
However, while the Hollywood A-lister would normally not need an introduction, he had to take a back-seat to the ear-popping scenes on stage.
Spielberg and a small entourage had earlier travelled to the Roundwood Inn pub in Co Wicklow for a quiet meal. The four vehicles with blacked-out windows which took them there led to speculation that The Boss was inside, and more than a hint of irony when it was eventually revealed which household name was the rural village’s star attraction.
“Someone asked could they take a picture and they said would you not prefer to wait for ‘Steven’.
“They thought it was The Boss, so they said, ‘Steven who?’,” an onlooker who expected to see Springsteen said.
In an afternoon of head-turning stars, as Spielberg was agreeing to the picture, the photographer was asked politely by a familiar-looking man at the back of the famed director’s posse to give him some space.
When The Boss comes to town, it seems, even an Oscar-winning actor like Daniel Day Lewis is just a background- filling extra on his stage.
