DESPITE living in almost identical climates, and having similar levels of education and social scenes, people in the Republic are still more likely to develop nearly all forms of cancer than our cousins in the North.

The joint National Cancer Registry (NCR) and Northern Ireland Cancer Registry (NICR) report has found that while some diagnosis rates are mirrored in both jurisdictions, the “relative risk of developing many of the cancers presented” is higher here.

As the table shows, non-melanoma skin cancer, leukaemia, bladder cancer, pancreas cancer and brain/central nervous system cancer rates are “significantly higher” on this side of the border.
