Cork teen walked into station to confess crimes
Vincent Morey, of 8 Ashmount, Silversprings, Cork, walked into Mayfield Garda station on August 10 last, according to Inspector Gary McPolin.
Without requesting the services of a solicitor, Morey then proceeded to tell gardaí about all of the crimes he had committed.
Now at Cork District Court, Judge Con O’Leary has imposed an eight-month jail sentence on Morey.
Allowing for the extensive level of co-operation and the fact that many of the crimes may never have been linked to Morey without his admissions, Judge O’Leary said that the maximum cumulative sentence could have run to 24 months.
Emmet Boyle, solicitor, said: “Many of these would have been unsolved offences without his admissions.
“He attended and said on video that he had committed the offences. But for the admissions the offence would have been largely unsolved. His admissions were of great assistance to the prosecution.
“His family situation was in flux. But he is now motivated to address his problems. He realises that he is going to be back before the courts again and again. He is making the first tentative steps; he is dealing with his addictions,” Mr Boyle said.
Morey pleaded guilty to driving five stolen cars, interfering with three parked cars, causing criminal damage to a car and two counts of theft of property from cars.
Judge O’Leary imposed a five-year driving disqualification as well as the eight-month prison sentence.
