Graham Dunne was charged at Bandon District Court yesterday in connection with the hit and run incident. He was charged with drink driving, refusing to give a test at Bandon Garda station and unauthorised use of a vehicle.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court again next Friday.

It is understood the injured man is from Glengarriff, and remains in a serious condition at Cork University Hospital.

His wife suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local doctor’s surgery.

The hit and run occurred near Abbeystrewery cemetery, about a mile from Skibbereen town centre, just before 10.30am. The road was closed for a number of hours on Thursday as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene.

Gardaí appealed for anybody who may have seen the van driving erratically or dangerously along the 10-mile stretch of road between Ballydehob and Skibbereen.
