Gun search led to cannabis find

GARDAÍ following up a report of a gun being held at a house in Blarney found a cannabis-growing operation during their search, Cork District Court heard yesterday.

Gun search led to cannabis find

Inspector Gary McPolin outlined the allegations against Daniel Siebold of 63 Riverview Estate, Tower, Blarney, Co Cork, so Judge Con O’Leary could decide on whether to deal with the case at district court level.

Judge O’Leary said it was suitable for the court and on the application of defence solicitor Frank Buttimer, he put the matter back to allow time for the prosecution to furnish statements to the defence.

When the case resumes in three weeks, Siebold must indicate if he is pleading guilty or not guilty.

The accused faces two charges: Cultivating cannabis plants without a licence at his home in Blarney on April 18; and having the drugs for his own use.

Insp McPolin said: “Gardaí were investigating a report that Daniel Siebold had what was believed to be a handgun at his home.”

He said a plastic gun was located and examined by Garda ballistics experts who reported that it was not a firearm within the meaning of the Firearms Act.

During the course of the search a home cannabis-growing operation was found inside a bedroom.

“Eight cannabis plants were seized, along with equipment normally associated with the cultivation of process,” said Insp McPolin.

The alleged value of the cannabis was €2,400.
