Vehicles may have been for tiger raid

GARDAÍ have uncovered three stolen vehicles which may have been stashed on the outskirts of Cork city for use in either a tiger kidnapping or armed robbery.

Vehicles may have been for tiger raid

Forensic experts are examining a 4x4 and two cars, one of which was fitted with a taxi plate which was stolen from another vehicle.

Gardaí are anxious to speak to anybody who may have seen the cars and jeep being moved into the Glounthaune area in recent days.

They were discovered last Monday, July 4 hidden in the village.

The cars are a 05-registered brown Nissan Almera and a grey 08-registered Honda Accord. They were both stolen from Monahan Road in Cork city on the night of June 30.

The black Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4 was stolen from the Wilton area on the night of June 22.

Why the thieves wanted a taxi roof sign also concerns gardaí.

The sign was stolen from a parked taxi in the city centre, also on the night of June 30 and was probably taken by the thieves after they had stolen the two cars.

When found the taxi plate had been fitted to the Honda Accord.

A senior garda source said it was “fair to say the gang were up to no good,” but added it was too early to speculate if they intended an elaborate armed robbery or a tiger kidnapping.

Whatever their intention, detectives do not believe the gang were planning anything in Glounthaune, but had merely stashed the vehicles there for safekeeping until they were needed.

They were spotted by a garda patrol from Glanmire which, after checking their registrations, established they had all been stolen, along with the taxi plate.

“We are currently examining a number of different theories and we are anxious to speak to anybody living in the Glounthaune area who may have seen these vehicles or anybody driving them between July 1 and July 4,” the garda source said.

Detectives are also examining CCTV footage in the area in an effort to see if they can identify the movements of the vehicles and those driving them.
