DJ Carey and Newman accuse AIB of ‘mistruths’

FORMER Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey and his partner, Sarah Newman, have accused AIB of peddling mistruths about them, as they last night claimed that they always “dealt proactively and professionally” with the bank, which is demanding €9.5 million from them.

The couple issued a statement last night in which they categorically denied they had failed to submit proposals to AIB regarding their outstanding liabilities to the bank.

“Detailed and comprehensive financial proposals, prepared by their financial advisors, were submitted to the bank on a number of occasions, most recently April of this year. Both Mr Carey and Ms Newman have dealt proactively and professionally with the bank and will continue to do so.

“Mr Carey nor Ms Newman will be commenting any further with regard to their circumstances,” the statement read.

In April 2007, Mr Carey took a €7.85m mortgage on a property at the Ladycastle estate in The K Club in Kildare and a property at Mount Juliet in Kilkenny.

In May of the same year, he also guaranteed €1.5m of the liabilities of Ms Newman.

For her part, Ms Newman acted as guarantor for DJ Carey’s €7.85m in liabilities and also took a €1.5m mortgage on another property in Ladycastle.

The couple were ordered to repay the money at the Commercial Court on Monday.

Neither were in court, but their lawyers told the court that while they were consenting to the judgment orders being sought by the bank against them, they wanted a stay on registration and execution of the orders for three months.
