PRESIDENT Mary McAleese will today open the country’s first dedicated prostate cancer institute.

Initial funding for the institute has been provided by Galway University Foundation and it will work on research programmes in addition to developing better therapies for patients with prostate cancer.

More than 3,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in Ireland each year. The services at the institute at University Hospital Galway will also be available to other hospitals.
