Gardaí promise ‘zero tolerance’ on antisocial behaviour for RAG week
Anglesea Street-based Supt Barry McPolin said a “zero tolerance” enforcement policy is being implemented to ensure the week passes free of incidents.
RAG Week is a traditional part of the student experience and features entertainment and activities, with money being raised for charity at the same time — but public order issues are often a problem.
“In recent years, RAG Week has moved away from charity to a festival where large quantities of alcohol has led to an increase in antisocial behaviour and problems with criminal behaviour in the student areas,” said Supt McPolin.
“This affects the quality of life of the local residents and compromises the safety of the students. The emphasis this year is on prevention. We hope the students enjoy themselves and have fun, however, they must show consideration to the residents of the area.”
A strategic plan involving college authorities, UCC Students Union (UCCSU), residents, publicans and landlords is in place to ensure RAG Week remains safe and peaceful.
There will be increased Garda presence day and night, particularly in areas previously identified as “hot spots” for antisocial behaviour.
UCCSU is operating a student patrol service again this year to help students in difficulty, explain public order laws and work with gardaí to accommodate local residents.
“It’s much better for a student who is drinking on the streets to have the laws put in perspective for them by a peer than facing a fine of €60 or more when approached by a Garda. Or worse, if convicted of a public order offence, a student won’t be able to travel or get Garda vetting,” said patrol manager and UCCSU deputy president Daithi Linnane.
UCC vice-president for the student experience, Con O’Brien said the measures adopted by the college last year greatly contributed to allaying residents’ fears and the student patrols proved successful last year.
“RAG Week is a wonderful opportunity for students to have some fun and should be enjoyed by all in the proper spirit, while giving something back to the community,” he added.
More than 100 events are planned for this year’s event, including live music showcasing UCC bands along with The RubberBandits from Limerick. The comedy hip hop duo play the Devere Hall at 7.30 this evening.
