Taoiseach leads tributes to ‘The Legend’ Doyle

THE Taoiseach was among those who paid tribute to Tipperary hurler John Doyle — nicknamed The Legend — winner of eight All-Ireland medals, three of which he won before he was 21.

The 80-year-old, who passed away yesterday, was widely regarded as one of the game’s all-time greats and served in Seanad Éireann from 1969-1973.

Brian Cowen last night said he was saddened to learn of Mr Doyle’s death.

“He was an immense hurler and an incredibly decent man,” he said.

“His love of the GAA was matched by his concern for his country and his own community.

“He was a Tipperary legend and a proud Irishman.

“He was passionate about politics and he served Fianna Fáil extremely well.”

Sports Minister Mary Hanafin extended her condolences to the family and friends of the former hurling star.

“He formed part of the formidable Tipperary full-back line known as ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ along with Mick Maher and Kieran Carey throughout the 1950s and provided stiff opposition for many forwards in games throughout the years, including the Cork great, Christy Ring.”
