Ginger injured in bicycle fall
Gerry, 59, now a Labour member of Limerick City Council, was last night at home nursing a litany of injuries after falling off his pedal bike on an icy patch of road.
His injuries include a broken arm, a broken rib, two gashes to his face which necessitated 16 stitches and various bumps and bruises.
Gerry said: “In all my years playing in the front row in rugby, I never got anything like this.”
Gerry was on his way to Castletroy College where he is teaching when he fell from his bike at around 8am on Monday.
“I moved from a cycle lane out onto a lane on the road as the cycle lane ended and I hit a patch of ice. I went with the bike and came crashing onto the road…
“A number of women came along and before I knew it they were giving me tea and had wrapped me in a blanket. You can’t beat a bit of TLC. I got a big fright and it’s great to be alive. I could have killed myself as I must have been going 30mph down the hill when I hit the ice…
“The ambulance people and the medical people at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital were brilliant. Even when I was brought in on Monday, the casualty area was packed.”
