Man, 41, killed after horrific crash with lorry
The accident happened on the N20 near the village of Rathduff at 9.25am yesterday and resulted in the road being closed for a number of hours.
Gardaí said they wouldn’t be releasing the name of the dead man until all his relatives had been contacted.
However, it is understood that he was a married man living on the northside of Cork city and was on his way back home after dropping a relative to Shannon airport.
Two nurses who witnessed the crash gave medical assistance at the scene until ambulance crews arrived.
Fire brigade crews from Mallow and Cork city had to cut him from the wreckage of his Nissan Almera hatchback.
The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to Cork University Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Garda crash experts carried out technical examinations at the scene.
Gardaí put in diversions at Bweeng and Bottlehill while the main road was being cleared of debris.
Superintendent Con Cadogan, who is leading the garda investigation, said both the car and the lorry were taken away for technical examination.
“We are appealing for anybody who witnessed the crash or saw either of the two vehicles just before it to contact Gurranabraher garda station at 021 4946200,” Supt Cadogan said.
Meanwhile, gardaí are also investigating a fatal accident in Co Kilkenny which claimed the life of a 46-year-old woman.
The accident happened shortly after 12 midnight when the woman lost control of her car and crashed into a ditch at Kildalton in Piltown.
She was pronounced dead at Waterford Regional Hospital.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact Mullinavat Garda Station on 051 898122.
