Gardaí seek help with teenager’s murder hunt
After a post mortem was carried out on Niall Dorr, from Avondale Park in Co Louth, yesterday, gardaí launched a formal murder enquiry into the death.
Two men, aged 21 and 23, arrested on Thursday evening, were still being questioned by officers at the time of going to press, while a third man aged 30 was arrested yesterday.
Mr Dorr, a trained kick-boxer who had ambitions to join the Irish Army, was assaulted as he walked with two friends along Castle Road, Dundalk at around 9pm on Wednesday.
It is a quiet road with many houses and apartments along it.
It is believed the group of friends became involved in an altercation with another group of up to six men and one woman.
In all around 10 people were involved in the on-street incident, which attracted the attention of local residents.
Patricia McQuillan, coach and founder of a local kick-boxing club, described the victim as a dedicated athlete. “He was the most polite and best mannered of young people you could meet,” she added.
Friends left bunches of flowers at the scene of the assault.
Mr Dorr, who was due to turn 19 shortly, attended St Mary’s College in Dundalk and recently completed a course at O’Fiach College.
Con McGinley, principal at St Mary’s, said staff and students and many friends of the former pupil were shocked and saddened.
“Niall did his leaving certificate here in 2009. It’s incredible to think that he is no longer on this earth,” said Mr McGinley.
“He was a grand lad, a typical teenager. A pleasant, courteous teenager. When you see a decent family like that get ripped apart by a tragedy like this your heart just goes out to them.
