BMW recalls cars over brake system fault

BMW is recalling more than 500 cars in Ireland due to possible problems with the power-braking system.

The move comes as part of a worldwide recall of 350,000 cars.

The affected models are V8 and V12-powered BMW 5, 6, and 7 Series and Rolls Royce cars, produced between July 2001 and November 2009.

According to the car manufacturer, a leak may develop in the power-braking system, potentially causing a vacuum loss and subsequent reduction of power-braking assistance. Mechanical braking is still available to slow and stop the vehicle.

BMW Ireland has said there have been no accidents or injuries reported. However, the company advised any concerned customers to contact the BMW customer service team on 1890 719 420.

A total of 198,000 vehicles have been recalled in the United States.

BMW is not the only car manufacturer to have had to issue a recall in recent months.

General Motors put out a notice in late September for 20,000 Cadillac CTS models that presented an increased risk of injury to shorter people who did not wear seatbelts.

In January, Honda Ireland had to recall 3,000 cars over an electric switch which could short circuit and cause a fire, part of a global recall by the car manufacturer.
